THE PHOTOCOPY CLUB

So last Thurs, lured by the promise of Sailor Jerry's (gimme rum gimme rum) I popped along to The Photocopy Club at Beach London where photographers from all over this big bad world had submitted photocopies of their work.

Here are some of my faves:

At the end of the night, you could buy the work off the walls. I bought the girl on the swing (and felt a little weird asking someone to rip her down, I felt like a hooligan). It makes me think of high summer in America. Maybe she's gonna jump off the swing and run inside for some fresh lemonade. It's by Declan Corbett from Two Islands Collective. Here's her temporary home on my wall until I decide what to do with her. Was thinking of framing her but I quite like the rustic 'shoddily tacked onto the wall' thing.

TERRY RICHARDSON X BARACK OBAMA

My friend Jerry brought this to my attention today. Terry Richardson must have been saving these, hoping and praying that Obama would be re-elected so he could casually throw them on the table like, 'Oh what, these? Just a little something I did when 'bama popped round. Nothin' special.'

Barack's gone down a little in my estimation 'cos Terry Richardson is such a dawg, but then I highly doubt he cares what I think. He's the murrrrrr farkin' president (again) biiiiiitch.

Wonder if T-Rich made him get his winky out? :(

P.S. Spacing is bad on here 'cos I'm on my parents' vintage computer and it ruins lives. And blog posts.

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2010

So last week myself and Jerry skipped down to the Natural History Museum to catch the last Saturday of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. We had one free pass between us (love Jerry's job) and intended to buy another ticket when we got there. Too bad the exhibition was completely sold out. Too GOOD that a guy from uni who I've not seen since the days of studying (I make that almost 4 years...) was on the desk. So we strode in on one pass! What luck. Thanks Charlie!

I love animals and I love photography so this exhibition was a dream come true for me. Here are my faves:

WOOF!

No, sadly this isn't a post about the popular children's TV programme 'Woof!' but a post about some rather cute canine photos I stumbled upon on Viktor Vauthier's blog. He's shot some lovely stuff for Lazy Oaf so I was intrigued to see his other work. And he sure got me with the dogs.

(NOT SO) MODEL CITIZEN

I love photography, especially really great portrait photography or fashion photography. None of that pretentious fashion bullshit that the cheaper magazines try and fail to do, but really good photos of really photogenic people. However, the process of taking the photos makes me cringe. How can someone be so narcissistic as to stand there and mince around really slowly in front of the camera whilst making sure their face says, 'Sex me' and their body says, 'Buy this shit'?

Take this kid (he's just turned 16, oh Jesus) for example. Hi Sylvester Ulv! You should be out tearing up the streets on your BMX/working a crappy Saturday job/illegally buying alcohol but instead you're getting your MAKE-UP done and pouting for Denmark. It's. Just. Not. Right.

MARIELLA FURRER

I love the Sunday Times. Especially when a shopkeeper gives me a copy free in the wee hours of Sunday morning as I gallop merrily round his store looking for water.

This week's supplements were particularly good, especially the feature on Mariella Furrer. She's been documenting child sex abuse in South Africa since 2002 and has immortalised some seriously heartbreaking moments. Despite being prescribed anti-depressants three years into the project, she refused to give up; "I became depressed and couldn't continue. A social worker suggested I stop but I'd worked so hard on this, I just couldn't."

This is my favourite image. (Although it feels slightly wrong having a 'favourite' image of child abuse.) It shows a girl trying to escape the room in the clinic where she is having a medical check-up. She had been abused by her own relative.
